Best Desks for Working From a Tiny Apartment

Compact, wall-mounted & closet-office desk setups that actually fit a small Canadian apartment.

Remote work changed the relationship between Canadian renters and their apartments. A space designed for sleeping and relaxing now also has to accommodate an 8-hour workday — in many cases without a spare room, a study, or even a defined corner to put a desk. In a studio apartment or a one-bedroom where the living room also serves as the home office, the setup matters a great deal for both productivity and the ability to mentally switch off at the end of the day.

This guide covers compact desk options, placement strategies, and the closet-office conversion that solves the problem entirely.

Desk Size: The Minimum That Works

Before choosing a desk, know your actual minimum:

Key takeaway: Minimum desk sizes for a small Canadian apartment: 80 × 40 cm for laptop-only work, 100 × 50 cm for a laptop with external monitor (the monitor needs 50–70 cm from face to eyes), and 140 × 60 cm for a desktop with dual monitors — a size difficult to fit in a studio.

Laptop only (occasional work): 80 × 40 cm. Fits on a small wall-mounted folding desk or a corner of a dining table.

Laptop + external monitor (daily work): 100 × 50 cm. The monitor needs to sit far enough from your face (50–70 cm) without the desk edge pressing into your wrists.

Desktop with dual monitors: 140 × 60 cm minimum. This size is difficult in a studio apartment — consider a monitor arm that mounts to the wall to reduce desk depth requirements.

Keyboard + mouse + notebook + coffee: Add 20 cm of width and 10 cm of depth to whatever your screen requires. A desk that fits the monitor but leaves no room for anything else creates constant frustration.

Compact Desk Options Available in Canada

IKEA MICKE (73 × 50 cm, ~$100)

The most widely used compact apartment desk in Canada. Built-in drawer and open storage on the right side. Fits in most apartment corners. Available in white, black, and grey. Lightweight enough to move easily.

Best for: Laptop-based work, students, side-by-side with a second MICKE for a wider setup.

Limitation: 73 cm width is narrow for a monitor — consider a monitor arm if using an external screen.

IKEA LINNMON + ADILS or ALEX legs (~$60–$200)

The LINNMON tabletop is a simple flat surface available in 100 × 60 cm and 150 × 75 cm. Combined with ADILS legs ($5 each, need 4) it makes a minimal desk at $60–$80. Combined with an ALEX drawer unit instead of rear legs, it adds filing and storage for $150–$200.

Best for: Anyone who wants a custom-width desk without paying custom-furniture prices. The 100 × 60 cm setup is the most popular small-apartment configuration.

IKEA TROTTEN (120 × 70 cm, ~$230)

A sit-stand desk with a manual crank mechanism. In a Canadian apartment where you sit at the desk for long hours, the ability to stand periodically is a real ergonomic improvement. The 120 × 70 cm surface is larger than most compact desks but justifies the space in a dedicated home office corner.

Best for: Full-time remote workers with space for a larger desk who want sit-stand capability without a motorized (expensive) frame.

Wall-mounted folding desk (Amazon.ca, ~$80–$150)

A desk that folds flat against the wall when not in use. Takes up zero floor space when closed — the wall profile is 10–15 cm. Open, it provides a 60–90 cm wide surface supported by fold-down legs.

Best for: Studios or small one-bedrooms where a permanent desk footprint is not acceptable. Works well for part-time remote work or students. Less suitable for daily full-time WFH — the lack of storage and the effort to set up and put away daily becomes tiring.

Mounting: 4 screws into the wall. Drywall anchors (toggle bolts) work if there is no stud in the right position. The desk must be level — use a torpedo level before tightening.

Corner desk (L-shaped, Amazon.ca, ~$100–$200)

An L-shaped desk puts monitors on the primary arm and reference materials, notebooks, and peripherals on the return. In a corner, an L-desk uses space that a straight desk cannot. Total footprint is typically 120 × 120 cm — larger than a straight desk but uses the dead corner space efficiently.

Best for: A dedicated home office corner in a one-bedroom apartment where a corner is available and the room can accommodate the footprint.

The Cloffice: Converting a Closet Into a Home Office

The cloffice (closet office) is the most space-efficient home office solution in a Canadian apartment. It uses the closet — a dedicated, enclosed space — for work, then closes completely when work is done.

Which closets work

Minimum dimensions: 55 cm deep × 80 cm wide × 200 cm tall. Most Canadian apartment reach-in bedroom closets meet this minimum.

Door type: Bifold doors (two panels that fold to the side) work best — they open fully without requiring swing clearance. Sliding doors also work. Hinged doors require swing clearance and are less convenient.

Setting up the cloffice

Remove the closet rod and any shelving you don’t need. Clothing from this closet moves to the bedroom wardrobe, under-bed storage, or a freestanding PAX unit elsewhere in the room.

Add a desktop: A shelf board at 75–80 cm height (standard desk height) across the full closet width serves as the desk surface. Use IKEA shelf brackets into studs ($5–$8 each) or a freestanding shelf unit. A solid 25 mm thick board does not flex under monitor weight.

Add shelving above: The space above the desk (80–180 cm height) fits 2–3 shelves for books, files, a printer, and supplies. IKEA BOAXEL or simple shelf boards on brackets work here.

Cable management: Drill a 35 mm hole in the desk surface near the wall for cables to pass through and down to a power bar on the floor. A rubber cable grommet ($3–$5 at Canadian Tire) finishes the hole cleanly.

Lighting: Closets have no window — a mounted LED strip under the shelf above the desk (IKEA ALEX or MITTLED LED strip, $15–$30) provides direct task lighting. A clip-on monitor light ($25–$50 at Amazon.ca) reduces eye strain.

Chair: An office chair that fits in the closet width (most go 60–70 cm wide). At the end of the workday, push it in and close the doors — the home office disappears entirely.

Desk Placement in a One-Room Apartment

Where you put the desk matters as much as which desk you choose.

Face the wall, not the room. A desk where you face the wall while working creates a visual boundary — you sit down, face the wall, and mentally enter work mode. A desk where you face the room means your resting space is always in your eyeline during work hours.

Not visible from the sofa. Placing the desk so it cannot be seen from the sofa lets the living area function as a genuine rest space. In a studio, this usually means positioning the desk behind a bookshelf divider or in an alcove.

Near a window, but not facing it. Natural light from the side (left or right of the monitor) reduces eye strain without creating screen glare. Facing a window creates glare on the monitor and makes your face dark on video calls.

Desk Storage in a Small Space

A desk in a small apartment needs built-in storage — loose items have nowhere else to go.

Monitor riser: A monitor riser with storage drawer (~$30–$60 CAD) lifts the screen to eye level and reclaims the space beneath it for a keyboard or small items.

Pegboard above the desk: A pegboard wall organizer kit (~$30–$50 CAD) mounts above the desk and holds accessories, headphones, cables, and sticky notes on hooks. Requires 4 screws, patchable at move-out.

Under-desk drawer unit: IKEA ALEX drawer unit on wheels ($120–$160) rolls under the desk and provides 5 drawers for files, office supplies, and cables.

Desktop organizer: A simple vertical organizer (Amazon.ca, ~$15–$25) holds notebooks, folders, and small items upright on the desk surface without spreading across it.
